About
My painting is colourful, free and quite rough – sometimes warm, sometimes strange.
The artists Roy Oxlade and Rose Wylie were family friends who I spent a lot of time with when I was growing up.
I’m sure I absorbed some of their influence. I like the work of Matisse, Klee, Chagall and Picasso.
I paint with oils, using cloth to put the paint on. I enjoy being able to paint layer after layer. Often one painting will have an old painting underneath it. I use charcoal to draw on top. I also use pen and watercolour, and have done various types of printmaking.
I was born in East Dulwich, London, in 1966, where I live today with my family.
In 2002 I attended a portrait course and then a weekly masterclass with Eileen Cooper RA, at the Dulwich Picture Gallery until 2005.
In 2003 I attended the Slade Summer School in Painting and Drawing with Richard Kenton Webb. Between 2003 and 2006 I attended painting and printmaking courses with Jane Joseph and Frank Connolly at Morley College.
Awards
2005 Special Award for Bird, 2005 International Art Exhibition, China, for the collograph Ducks.
2006 Deborah Roslund Prize at Dulwich Picture Gallery Summer Exhibition for the painting Man.
